Static Character
A static character remains fundamentally consistent in belief or disposition across the story.
Static Character in a story
Static does not mean inactive or simple. The character may withstand severe tests and change the people or institutions around them.
Original fiction example
A teacher refuses to falsify exam results through threats, dismissal, and public blame, eventually forcing the school board to change.

Why writers use it
Use a static character when steadfast conviction, rather than internal transformation, drives the arc.
A useful revision question: Where does this device change what the reader understands, expects, or feels? If removing it leaves the passage unchanged, it may need a clearer function.
A common mistake
Consistency without escalating tests gives readers little opportunity to understand the value or cost of the character's position.
