A character arc is the pattern of change, resistance, corruption, or steadfastness revealed by a character's choices across a story.
Character Arc in a story
The arc connects belief to behavior. Pressure tests the starting worldview, consequences expose its limits, and later decisions show whether the character changes or holds firm.
Original fiction example
A judge who believes mercy weakens justice first rejects every exception, then risks her career to correct a lawful but devastating sentence.

A useful revision question: Where does this device change what the reader understands, expects, or feels? If removing it leaves the passage unchanged, it may need a clearer function.
