Original fiction example

Every lie told in the town adds another step to the courthouse staircase, and residents complain mainly about the climb.

Why writers use it

Use magical realism when the impossible belongs to the story's social and emotional reality.

A useful revision question: Where does this device change what the reader understands, expects, or feels? If removing it leaves the passage unchanged, it may need a clearer function.

A common mistake

Adding unexplained magic to a realistic setting does not by itself engage the tradition or its cultural history.
