It can communicate efficiently among insiders while excluding, impressing, or confusing outsiders.

The divers call a damaged air line a whisper because the first warning is heard rather than seen.

A useful revision question: Where does this device change what the reader understands, expects, or feels? If removing it leaves the passage unchanged, it may need a clearer function.
