Diction
Diction is a writer's or character's choice of words, including their precision, register, connotation, and level of formality.
Diction in a story
Diction shapes voice and viewpoint. Two narrators can describe the same room as a sanctuary, a showroom, a cage, or a well-maintained asset.
Original fiction example
A botanist notices foxglove and yarrow where a trespasser notices cover, sightlines, and the nearest gate.

Why writers use it
Use diction to align language with the speaker's knowledge, attitude, culture, and immediate purpose.
A useful revision question: Where does this device change what the reader understands, expects, or feels? If removing it leaves the passage unchanged, it may need a clearer function.

Decorative synonyms can weaken precision when they do not belong to the viewpoint.
