Frame Story
A frame story is an outer narrative that contains and gives context to one or more inner narratives.
Frame Story in a story
The frame determines who tells the embedded story, to whom, under what pressure, and with what possible distortion.
Original fiction example
During a tribunal, five witnesses recount the same expedition while the judge gradually realizes the testimony is addressed to someone else in the room.

Why writers use it
Use a frame when the act of telling changes the meaning or credibility of the inner story.
A useful revision question: Where does this device change what the reader understands, expects, or feels? If removing it leaves the passage unchanged, it may need a clearer function.
A common mistake
An outer narrator who disappears after page one may add distance without adding function.
