Fiction Timeline Checker

Audit chronological logic before a continuity reader finds the problem. The checker sorts events, identifies character collisions, and preserves the timeline as CSV or JSON.

Minutes required when the same character changes place.
Editable project data
JSON preserves the complete editable event list.
Event 1
Separate names with commas.
Event 2
Separate names with commas.

Add a named event with a date and start time to begin the continuity audit.

Continuity errors are usually relationship errors in disguise

A timeline error rarely stays confined to a date. If a character arrives too early, they may know something before learning it, recover before being injured, or appear in two scenes whose emotional sequence can no longer be true.

Record the smallest unit that matters to the story. A multigenerational saga may need years and seasons; a locked-room mystery may need minutes, entrances, exits, and travel through a building. Treat travel warnings as questions because the checker cannot know whether two labels describe neighboring rooms or different countries.

NovelOS Studio expands timeline work through Blueprint, scene cards, plotlines, characters, places, and Timeline View. The free checker audits a compact event list; NovelOS keeps chronology connected to the planning and manuscript environment.

How to use this tool

  1. Add each event with a story date, start time, duration, place, and characters.
  2. Set a minimum travel gap for events that occur in different places.
  3. Run the audit to reveal overlaps, reversed durations, and travel risks.
  4. Export the sorted timeline and resolve flagged events in the manuscript.

What the workspace includes

  • Checks each named character across the entered events
  • Separates definite overlaps from possible travel problems
  • Sorts events chronologically while preserving editable data
  • Exports CSV for review and JSON for later editing
