The relationship is the main narrative promise, even when mystery, fantasy, history, or other plotlines surround it.
Original fiction example
Two rival conservators must restore the same ruined theater while deciding whether trust can survive their competing claims to it.

Chemistry alone cannot carry the genre if the relationship never develops or resolves.
