Narrative Distance
Narrative distance is the felt closeness between the narration and a viewpoint character's immediate experience.
Narrative Distance in a story
Close narration adopts the character's perceptions and language; distant narration summarizes, contextualizes, or views events across broader time and knowledge.
Original fiction example
Close: The latch clicked behind her. Too late. Distant: Years later, she would remember the small sound as the end of her first life.
