Foil
A foil is a character whose similarities and differences make another character's qualities easier to see.
Foil in a story
The pair often faces related pressures but chooses differently, revealing values and alternatives without explanatory narration.
Original fiction example
Two heirs inherit equal shares: one protects the failing factory for its workers, while the other sells to fund a public hospital.

Why writers use it
Use a foil to dramatize roads the protagonist might have taken.
A useful revision question: Where does this device change what the reader understands, expects, or feels? If removing it leaves the passage unchanged, it may need a clearer function.
A common mistake
A foil needs an independent desire and cannot exist only as a comparison device.
