Backstory
Backstory is the relevant history that occurred before the narrative's present action.
Backstory in a story
It can explain relationships, fears, skills, obligations, and unfinished conflicts. The reader usually needs its consequences before needing its complete chronology.
Original fiction example
Before the novel begins, Inez testified against her mentor. In chapter one, his daughter becomes her new supervisor.

Why writers use it
Use backstory to give present choices pressure, meaning, and contradiction.
A useful revision question: Where does this device change what the reader understands, expects, or feels? If removing it leaves the passage unchanged, it may need a clearer function.

A long history lesson arriving before the reader cares about its consequence will stall the current story.
