Subplot
A subplot is a secondary line of action that develops alongside and interacts with the main plot.
Subplot in a story
It may test the same theme differently, complicate resources, reveal another relationship, or create consequences that converge with the central conflict.
Original fiction example
While investigating election fraud, the protagonist tries to prevent her brother from selling the family newspaper that holds the only surviving archives.

Why writers use it
Use a subplot to add pressure and resonance that changes the main story.
A useful revision question: Where does this device change what the reader understands, expects, or feels? If removing it leaves the passage unchanged, it may need a clearer function.
