Rhythm
Rhythm is the patterned movement created by stressed and unstressed sounds, sentence lengths, pauses, and repetition.
Rhythm in a story
Prose rhythm can accelerate action, hold attention on an image, imitate thought, or create contrast between scenes.

Run. Turn. Miss the step. The alley opened at last, long and empty beneath the rain.

A useful revision question: Where does this device change what the reader understands, expects, or feels? If removing it leaves the passage unchanged, it may need a clearer function.

Short sentences do not automatically create speed if the underlying action remains repetitive.
