Novella
A novella is a work of prose fiction longer than a short story and shorter than a typical novel.
Novella in a story
Its compressed scale often supports one central conflict, limited viewpoints, a concentrated setting, or a shorter span of time.
Original fiction example
A customs officer has one night to decide whether to admit a ship whose passengers all possess documents in her handwriting.

Why writers use it
Use novella length when the premise needs sustained development without several novel-sized plotlines.
A useful revision question: Where does this device change what the reader understands, expects, or feels? If removing it leaves the passage unchanged, it may need a clearer function.

Stretching a single turn across novel length can dilute intensity, while overcrowding a novella can reduce consequence to summary.
