Hero
A hero is a central or celebrated character whose actions involve courage, sacrifice, exceptional achievement, or service to others.
Hero in a story
Heroism depends on the values of the story and society, which may disagree about who deserves the name.
Original fiction example
The official hero won the siege; the novel follows the quartermaster who saved civilians by disobeying his orders.

A powerful protagonist is not heroic merely because the narrative centers them.
