Assonance
Assonance is the repetition of vowel sounds in nearby words.
Assonance in a story
Because vowels can stretch or tighten the felt movement of a sentence, assonance often works more subtly than rhyme or alliteration.

Low boats moved home through the cold fog, each o sound lengthening the difficult return.
