## Theme in a story

A theme is usually richer than a moral statement. The novel can test several answers through people who live under different conditions.

## Original fiction example

> A story about inheritance may ask whether preserving a legacy honors the dead or gives them control over the living.

## Why writers use it

Use theme to connect choices and consequences without forcing every element to prove one slogan.

**A useful revision question:** Where does this device change what the reader understands, expects, or feels? If removing it leaves the passage unchanged, it may need a clearer function.

Characters who speak only as positions in an argument will lose their individual motives.
