## Subtext in a story

It arises from shared history, conflicting aims, social rules, omission, gesture, and the gap between public language and private intention.

> “You remembered the good cups,” Mara says when her estranged sister sets the table for two.

## Why writers use it

Use subtext when characters cannot, will not, or need not state the full meaning directly.
