# Stakes: Definition and Fiction Example | NovelOS Studio

> Stakes are the meaningful consequences attached to a character's success, failure, delay, or method of pursuing a goal. See an original fiction example, why...

## Stakes in a story

They can be material, relational, moral, social, psychological, or existential. Strong stakes are specific to the character and can conflict with one another.

## Original fiction example

> If Ada publishes the evidence, she may stop the contaminated-water project but expose the forged credential that lets her practice medicine.

This example is original to the NovelOS glossary. It illustrates the term without borrowing a passage from a published novel.

## Why writers use it

Use stakes to make choices costly and outcomes matter beyond immediate inconvenience.

**A useful revision question:** Where does this device change what the reader understands, expects, or feels? If removing it leaves the passage unchanged, it may need a clearer function.

## A common mistake

Claims that everything will be lost remain abstract until the story shows what, for whom, and through which consequence.

## Use stakes in NovelOS Studio

Develop character psychology, goals, contradictions, relationships, and change. [The Oracle](/features/the-oracle/) sits inside the same NovelOS Studio project as your characters, world, timeline, manuscript, goals, tracker, revision tools, and publishing exports.

Record the idea where it affects the book, test it in scenes, and revise it beside the surrounding prose. NovelOS Studio keeps the craft decision attached to the novel instead of leaving it in a separate worksheet.
