## Plot in a story

Plot concerns why events lead to one another and how each change alters available choices, not merely the order in which incidents occur.

## Original fiction example

> A stolen census leads a clerk to falsify one record, which saves a family, exposes a larger fraud, and makes her the investigator's primary suspect.

## Why writers use it

Use plot to transform character intention into escalating consequence.

**A useful revision question:** Where does this device change what the reader understands, expects, or feels? If removing it leaves the passage unchanged, it may need a clearer function.
