## Memoir in a story

Unlike autobiography, memoir need not cover an entire life. It uses scene, reflection, selection, and acknowledged limits of memory.

## Original fiction example

> A retired cartographer writes about the five maps she falsified, organizing each chapter around a border that no longer exists.

## Why writers use it

Use memoir form to investigate the meaning of lived experience rather than merely record chronology.

**A useful revision question:** Where does this device change what the reader understands, expects, or feels? If removing it leaves the passage unchanged, it may need a clearer function.

## A common mistake

Novelistic technique does not authorize inventing material facts while presenting them as memory.
