## Flashback in a story

Unlike a brief recollection, a flashback temporarily stages the past with its own action, setting, and immediate uncertainty.

## Original fiction example

> As the elevator stalls, Mina returns to the childhood blackout when her brother vanished between floors.

## Why writers use it

**A useful revision question:** Where does this device change what the reader understands, expects, or feels? If removing it leaves the passage unchanged, it may need a clearer function.

If the past contains more urgency than the current plot, the main timeline may be starting in the wrong place.
