## Dilemma in a story

A strong dilemma cannot be solved by discovering that one option was harmless all along.

## Original fiction example

> The doctor can reveal the epidemic and trigger a border closure, or delay the warning and preserve the only route for medicine.

## Why writers use it

Use a dilemma to force values into action and reveal what the character will sacrifice.

**A useful revision question:** Where does this device change what the reader understands, expects, or feels? If removing it leaves the passage unchanged, it may need a clearer function.

A choice between an obviously good and obviously bad option creates a decision, but little moral pressure.
