A scene card is a compact planning record of what changes during one scene and why that change happens. The most useful card captures an inherited condition, an immediate character goal, the tactic used to pursue it, the resistance that alters the attempt, the decisive turn, and the conditions passed forward. It gives the writer enough causal information to draft the scene without reducing the eventual prose to a list of beats.

Consider an unnamed municipal water chemist whose laboratory has detected a contaminant in a public reservoir. The reservoir is closed, the result is incomplete, and the city council intends to reopen the water supply at four o’clock. During the next scene, the chemist wants the laboratory director to preserve the closure until a second test is complete. She begins with technical evidence, meets political pressure, discovers that the original sensor has disappeared, and files a public incident notice. By the end, the reservoir remains closed, yet she has lost access to the laboratory and made the dispute public.

“The chemist argues with her director about the reservoir” summarizes the activity. It leaves out the machinery that makes the scene matter. A causal card records the situation before the argument, the attempted route, the choice that changes the route, and the state inherited by the next scene. The distinction is especially valuable in a long novel, where a vivid scene can still create a broken chain three chapters later.

This guide focuses on the connection between cards. Here, the central question is more specific: how can one Scene Card prove that its scene is caused by earlier events and creates usable conditions for what follows?

## Treat each Scene Card as a state change

Before planning what happens, write down the few story conditions that matter at the entrance. A condition is a fact that limits or enables action. It may concern knowledge, access, authority, trust, time, evidence, safety, money, location, injury, obligation, or another resource that the characters can use or lose.

The water chemist enters with five relevant conditions:

* The reservoir is closed pending a second test.
* She has a partial laboratory result and access to the raw sensor data.
* The director has authority to release the public report.
* The council has announced a four o’clock reopening.
* She still believes the director will follow the laboratory protocol if shown enough evidence.

This is the **before-state**. It should contain only facts that influence the present attempt. The chemist’s university history, the building’s architecture, and the director’s complete career may matter elsewhere, though copying all of them onto this card would hide the variables readers need to track.

Now define the intended after-state. The chemist wants the reservoir to remain closed until the confirmation test is finished. That result is concrete, possible within the scene, and open to resistance. “Expose corruption” is a story-scale aim. “Convince the director to sign a six-hour extension before the council call” supplies an immediate result that another person can grant, refuse, or complicate.

Jack Bickham’s _Scene & Structure_ distinguishes the large story goal from a clear short-term scene goal. The small goal should contribute to the larger pursuit while creating a question the current scene can answer. This prevents a card from describing atmosphere or authorial purpose as though it were character action. “Show that the city is careless” may be a reason to include the scene. It does not tell the chemist what to do when the director enters.

A practical causal card can begin with four planning lines:

| Failure exposure    | What can worsen through this attempt            | The city may reopen, and the chemist may lose access to the evidence. |

These lines create a controlled starting state. They do not predict every exchange. The card still leaves room for voice, observation, tactical improvisation, and discoveries made while drafting.

Treat the causal method as the content you choose to record, rather than as a set of mandatory software fields.

## Record the attempt that produces the change

A before-state and desired after-state still need a mechanism between them. The mechanism is the character’s attempt under resistance. Write it as a sequence of decisions rather than a tour of events:

**Inherited pressure → goal → first tactic → resistance → revised tactic → turning choice**

The chemist first presents the laboratory result and asks for the extension. The director does not merely say no. He challenges the route: the sample’s chain of custody is incomplete, the council has already announced reopening, and keeping the reservoir closed will trigger emergency water purchases the city cannot fund. This resistance attacks her evidence, authority, and available time.

Generic obstruction often creates motion without producing causality. A locked office door delays the chemist. A locked office that protects the only chain-of-custody log changes her plan because access to the evidence is now part of the conflict. An unrelated fire alarm may add urgency, yet it can also let both characters escape the disagreement. Resistance earns space on the card when it forces the viewpoint character to reassess a belief, change tactics, accept a cost, or choose between incompatible results.

The revised tactic should respond to what was learned. The chemist offers to rerun the test while the director handles the council. He then reveals that the original sensor cannot be found and orders her to classify the first result as equipment error. At that moment, technical persuasion is no longer sufficient. She must decide whether to obey, search quietly, or create a record outside the director’s control.

That decision is the turn. Story Grid describes a working scene through a change in value produced when a character’s initial strategy meets an unexpected complication and the character acts under a tradeoff. Bickham’s goal, conflict, and outcome model uses different terms. Both approaches direct attention toward the same practical problem: the character’s method meets reality, and the response creates a condition that did not exist at the entrance.

The chemist files a public incident notice from her phone. The action is observable, hard to retract, and costly. It reveals her priority more clearly than an internal statement about integrity. The director confiscates her laboratory badge and tells security to escort her out. The scene now has a completed causal operation: evidence prompted persuasion; resistance exposed suppression; suppression prompted disclosure; disclosure changed access, authority, and public knowledge.

When a planned turn feels arbitrary, test the information available at the moment of choice. What does the viewpoint character know? What do they believe each option will cause? Which relationship, rule, or previous experience makes one cost more tolerable than another? Keep the card at decision scale. “They argue for ten minutes, walk to the records room, make a call, return to the office, and speak to security” follows chronology. “After discovering that the sensor is missing, she abandons private persuasion and files a public notice, sacrificing laboratory access to preserve the closure” records dramatic causality. The first version can be reconstructed during drafting. The second protects the reason the scene exists.

## Write the delta before writing the synopsis

The **delta** is the difference between the story state before and after the scene. Borrowing the term from mathematics helps separate lasting change from surface activity. A conversation can contain many lines while producing a small delta. A silent decision can create a large one if it changes allegiance, access, or obligation.

For the reservoir scene, the delta looks like this:

This table exposes weak outcomes quickly. “The director becomes angry” changes emotion, yet it may leave the next scene unchanged. “The director revokes the chemist’s badge” removes a resource and forces a new route. “The chemist feels betrayed” becomes causally useful when that interpretation changes whom she trusts, what she reveals, or which action she takes next.

Wins also need a delta. If the director signs the extension, the scene can still change the evidence trail, the relationship, the deadline, or the opposition’s strategy. A victory that leaves every other condition untouched may close the line cleanly. That can be appropriate near a resolution. In the middle of a novel, it often means the card has solved a problem without creating further pressure.

After the delta is clear, write the short synopsis. Starting with a summary encourages writers to preserve the most visible events. Starting with changed conditions gives the synopsis a causal spine. For example:

> When the director dismisses the contamination result and reveals that the original sensor is missing, the chemist files a public incident notice; the reservoir stays closed, but she loses laboratory access and must recover the raw data before the city overturns her warning.

The sentence identifies the trigger, resistance, committed action, immediate result, cost, and inherited obligation. It omits the conversational route, room description, gestures, and exact sequence of minor discoveries. Those belong in the draft or in the full scene content when they need advance planning.

Do not demand the same kind of delta from every genre. A romance scene may move consent, trust, or mistaken interpretation. A mystery may change the clue set, suspect access, or confidence in a theory. A fantasy scene may alter magical capacity, political legitimacy, or knowledge of a rule. A quiet literary scene may change what a character is willing to admit or the future they can still imagine. The common requirement is a change readers can feel and later scenes can inherit.

## Audit the handoffs across the full sequence

Individual cards can appear strong while the novel still moves as a collection of episodes. Read the cards in order and compare each delta with the next card’s before-state. The handoff should preserve enough of the previous consequence to explain the new goal, resistance, or interpretation.

The scene after the laboratory confrontation should consume at least one changed condition. The chemist may visit a contracted data center because her badge was revoked, call a technician because the sensor vanished, or face a council lawyer because the incident notice became public. If she instead attends an unrelated family dinner and the reservoir dispute disappears for six chapters, the writer needs either a deliberate subplot break with continuing pressure or a stronger causal bridge.

Use these sequence diagnostics during outlining or structural revision:

* **Orphan input:** A card begins with a deadline, clue, injury, permission, or conflict that no earlier scene created.
* **Phantom prerequisite:** A character uses knowledge, access, trust, or equipment that the story never established.
* **Erased consequence:** A cost disappears as soon as the next scene begins. The revoked badge works only if it changes the chemist’s available routes.
* **Duplicate delta:** Several cards alter the same variable in the same direction. Three scenes that each make the chemist “more suspicious” may need distinct evidence, action, or consolidation.
* **Stalled variable:** A major promise enters the story and remains unchanged across too many cards. A countdown that loses no time and closes no options stops creating pressure.
* **Uniform turn:** Every card pivots through a revelation, confrontation, or interruption. Shawn Coyne’s scene-tracking guidance recommends varying action and revelation turns so the sequence does not become predictable.

The removal test provides a final check. Delete one card and ask what later scene becomes impossible or substantially different. If every later card survives unchanged, the scene may offer texture, characterization, or thematic resonance, though its claimed causal function is weak. A cause-and-effect Scene Card does not need to contain the whole scene. It needs to preserve the pressure that enters, the attempt that transforms it, and the conditions that leave.
